Righteousness exalteth a nation: But sin is a reproach to any people. Proverbs 14:34 KJV
Righteousness means uprightness, it means also right standing with God, which is a moral and spiritual rectitude in every area and relation. Righteousness is moral and spiritual integrity and virtuous character, and it exalts a nation.
When God talks about nation, it may not necessarily mean a country or a place, God refers to people as nations most of the time, because it is the people who form the different nations. There can never be a single nation without people, so, every time the word nation is mentioned, it is used to describe a particular people.
When Rebekah was pregnant with twins and there was much struggle between the two children in her womb, she went to enquire of the Lord about the pregnancy, the Bible says in Genesis 25:22-23, And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD. And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger. The two babies were described as nation by God even before they were born; is that not what it was truly? Esau became Edom, while Jacob became Israel.
Our scriptural text says, Righteousness exalts a nation: But sin is a reproach to any people. When the people who form a nation become righteous and live righteous, their righteousness will exalts them and thus exalts their nation, but when they are given to sin, their sin become a reproach, bringing them shame. This doesn’t mean everyone in a particular nation must become righteous, but when there are individuals who decide to become righteous, especially the leaders who lead, God would see the nations being led by the righteous leaders as righteous nations, like in the case of David, whose right standing with God made the nation enjoy special blessings and favour from God.
Righteousness exalts a nation, the righteousness of David was a blessing to the nation Israel; and when he sinned, the whole nation also suffered for it because in the sight of God, the leader was the nation. You are a nation, and as a nation, you have to be righteous and live righteous; don’t give yourself to sin because sin brings shame.

Precious Father, I thank you for giving me your righteousness; I have right standing with you because of what you have done for me in Christ, and now, I enjoy promotions, hallelujah! In Jesus name. Amen.
